On June 21, 2007 the Senate Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Caucus sponsored a briefing in cooperation with the National Hydrogen Association and the American Chemical Society.

The briefing was held in the elegant Mansfield Room in the US Capitol building. Over 130 industry experts and government and congressional staff heard presentations from some of the key leaders of the hydrogen economy.

The Honorable Senator Byron Dorgan of North Dakota and Representative Bob Inglis of South Carolina spoke on the importance of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies to the future of our country. Presentations were made by Jerome Hinkle of the NHA, Rich Goodstein of Air Products and Chemicals, Keith Cole of General Motors, Judith Bayer of UTC Power, and Ethan Brown of Ballard Power Systems. Their presentations are posted below. The Department of Defense had displays of various applications for hydrogen fuel cells posted around the room, providing valuable illustrations of these technologies.

In addition to the briefing, Senator Byron Dorgan sponsored a “Ride & Drive” on the Capitol grounds. The “Ride & Drive” allowed briefing participants, additional congressional staff, and interested members of the public to see four hydrogen fueled vehicles, ask questions of the engineers, and even drive the cars! General Motors provided a hydrogen fuel cell Chevrolet Equinox and HydroGen3, Toyota had a hydrogen fuel cell Highlander present, and BMW showed off its new Hydrogen 7.
